Do Not Miss This Area of Potential

Here is a quick tip to help make sure your patients are getting the treatment they need and your schedule is staying full in your practice.

One area where potential is being lost in dental practices:

  • A patient comes in for restorative treatment

  • The focus is only on the restorative procedure that day

  • The patient isn’t informed before the end of the visit what the next step is

  • As a result, the patient isn’t clear about why they need the treatment and the importance of scheduling it

Doctors: I recommend that before you leave any operative appointment that you do a very quick handoff to your Dental Assistant:

  1. Tell them what the patient's next step is

  2. Remind them of why it needs to be done

  3. Create a sense of an urgency of how soon the patient needs to come back

Adding this to your protocol for every operative appointment will reinforce those treatment recommendations. The assistant can then take the patient to the front and also pass the information to your Treatment Coordinator to get your patients healthy and on track with their treatment plans.

Waiting 6 months to bring treatment up again sometimes devalues the recommendation that you originally made, so be sure to add this quick handoff to the end of every operative appointment and I think you'll see a difference right away.
