How to Make a Positive Change in Your Practice

One of the ways that we help dentists reduce stress, increase profitability and create a practice they love is to talk about the things that our clients are tolerating in their practices. I want to start by sharing with your the definition of tolerate.

Tolerate - allow the existence, occurrence, or practice of (something that one does not necessarily like or agree with) without interference.

There are so many things that doctors tolerate in their businesses, from something going on with a team member, such as absenteeism, to equipment issues, or the overall atmospere in the practice. Sometimes they're tolerating not reaching their goals, or consistently not getting the results that they're looking for. A part of practice growth is taking time to create an awareness of what it is in your practice that you're tolerating.

Doing the following exercise when you have a clear mind and can focus on your practice will help you target areas that need positive change:

  1. Write down anything going on in your practice that you are currently tolerating; team, equipment, results, etc.

  2. Find solutions to those things you can change now.

  3. Mark those changed items off your list!

This is a very powerful exercise because sometimes when we have many things in our lives or in our practices that we're tolerating, it's easier to just pretend like they're not there. We ignore them because of the feeling of overwhelm. It's very empowering to make that list and start picking one or two things to make a positive change, so you can turn something that you're tolerating into a strategy that is supporting you in your practice. It frees up energy for you to focus on your goals and what makes you happy.
