Abandon the Sinking Ship Employee

I have doctors ask me all the time how they should handle an employee with a negative attitude.

The first thing I want to say to this is, having a negative employee costs you more money than you even realize. Negative energy will cause a ripple effect whether with your patients or other team members. It’s important to address this head on, however it can be difficult to know what to say to them because it’s really just that they are bringing a negative energy or vibe to the table.

I recommend having a rule in your practice which states:

You are responsible for the energy you bring into this practice.

Doctors, before you make this rule it’s important that you follow it and lead by example. Be careful that you don’t bring your stresses to the office whether it’s personal or business, as this can bring negative energy into the practice. Once you know you are following the rule, then you can hold your team accountable for doing the same.

The practice’s energy is felt by both patients and team members and can have either a negative or positive impact on the outcome of how profitable and productive you are in your practice.

Make this a rule in your practice and maybe even post it where team members see it as they walk in the door every day to remind them:

Each person is responsible for the energy they bring into the practice.
